- Abstract:
Effective communication in any construction project, including city regeneration, plays a crucial role in aligning diverse stakeholders, fostering community trust, and achieving shared goals while addressing complex social, economic, and environmental challenges. Leveraging emerging digital tools, such as generative AI, offers potential to refine and enhance communication process. This study explores the role of ChatGPT in supporting written communication within this complex environment and examines variations in performance between ChatGPT 3.5 and the more advanced ChatGPT 4o. Using a simulated scenario, 20 participants, comprising general contractors and client representatives, engaged in two rounds of email exchanges and subsequently evaluated three emails against seven communication criteria: clarity, conciseness, completeness, call to action, courtesy, personalisation, and composition. Preliminary observations suggest that ChatGPT 3.5 may have advantages in clarity and conciseness, while ChatGPT 4o appeared to generate more comprehensive content, though it was relatively less preferred by participants. Factors such as clarity, calls to action, and conciseness emerged as potentially influential in crafting prompts for improved email effectiveness. These findings provide initial insights while highlighting the need for further exploration in broader contexts.
