  • Abstract:
    Regeneration expands on sustainable and circular measures for harm mitigation by also focusing on repairing damage and improving well-being. However, despite efforts in, e.g., regenerative building design, there is yet no regenerative focus in building production research, nor a widespread implementation in building production praxis (except a few isolated cases). Nonetheless, regeneration in building production could potentially improve practices, businesses, and skills towards resource efficiency, and even go beyond climate neutrality towards climate positivity. In this paper, we conduct a systematic literature review in regeneration concepts within urban planning, architectural design, and business model innovation. Then, using the phenomena construction methodology, we conceptualize basic notions of regeneration in building production. We frame our effort with the sustainable transition theory. We posit that regenerative building production could reflect, e.g., net-positive supply chains, renewable on-site energy, and upskilling construction crews. However, to become widespread praxis, processes, skills, stakeholder needs, and value flows should be approached through a lens emphasizing a long-lasting net positive impact, and an economic perspective geared towards resource efficiency and the planetary boundaries, rather than just short-term monetary benefits.
