  • Abstract:
    The call for climate-resilient urban design has never been more urgent as cities worldwide grapple with rapid urbanisation, extreme weather events, and dwindling resources. This study adopts a systems thinking approach to uncovering the interconnected strategies for building regenerative cities that restore ecosystems, strengthen resilience, and drive sustainable urban transformation. Through a desk study and interviews with 17 experts from the UK, Sri Lanka, and Australasia, the research identifies seven core urban design principles with 36 strategies that restore, renew, and revitalise urban spaces and communities. The findings emphasise that sustainable energy and water management, governance, policy frameworks and technological innovations, and nature-based solutions are central to achieving regenerative cities. Using causal loop diagramming, the study uncovers 47 reinforcing feedback loops, including the dynamic between policy support and community engagement, that propel sustainable practices forward. A balancing loop was identified, showing how compact development reduces green infrastructure, mitigated by permeable surfaces. By advancing urban resilience frameworks, this study provides practical guidance for policymakers and planners, pinpointing areas where governance and practice should focus to overcome barriers and foster long-term sustainability.
