  • Abstract:
    With the rise of urban living, focusing people at the heart of building regenerative cities has become imperative, with the concept of ‘people-focused’ design manifesting within placemaking principles and practices. Increasingly, within built environment design policies, civil engineers are interacting with placemaking principles, evidenced in major infrastructure projects. However, there remains limited understanding of how the civil engineering profession has adapted with the increase in placemaking ideology and whether the role of ‘serving society’ by the civil engineering profession is effectively executed through placemaking principles. This is important as without sufficient understanding of how civil engineering practices currently interact with placemaking principles, there remains a risk of the sector failing to achieve a more holistic ‘people-focused’ approach and sustaining future communities. This paper draws on semi-structured interviews with civil engineers involved in UK-based urban regeneration schemes. Through this, it explores whether the role of the civil engineer has adapted to accommodate placemaking principles. The findings present new insights into the role of the civil engineer in placemaking projects, and provides recommendations for future placemaking policies within the civil engineering field.
