This study investigated condom use among male construction workers who engage with female sex workers in the Western Cape, South Africa. It used three self-reported measures of condom use with a sex worker: condom use at last sex, frequency of condom use in the past 3 months, and intention to use a condom at next sex. Cross-sectional data were collected from 227 participants across 18 sites representing 7 firms. Multiple linear regression identified several determinants of condom use frequency, including risky sexual behaviour, HIV/AIDS knowledge, and control over condom use. The likelihood of using a condom at next encounter was influenced by drug consumption, HIV/AIDS knowledge, control over condom use, and a positive attitude toward condom use. Binomial logistic regression showed that workers with higher levels of risky sexual behaviour were 1.08 times more likely to have used a condom at last sex, with no other variables being significant. The study emphasizes the complex factors influencing condom use and the value of methodological triangulation in cross-sectional survey design, enhancing the precision of assessment of condom use.
